We have designed the project “Learning is Life” (Lernen ist Leben) to look at new ways of defining education outside of the ever-precent logic of use, singularity and growth while integrating indigenous value systems. We are an interdisciplinary team from different cultural contexts (Peru, Columbia and Germany) and we value respecting and supporting diversity in our work.
Our central aim was and is to encourage profound reflection about past and present relations between Europe and Latin America and additionally to implement systems of thought which equally incorporate with the worldviews and realities of the peoples of both continents. Equality is very important in our educational processes, because we are convinced that great potential lies in the meeting between European scientific-technological knowledge and the natural wisdom of the indigenous peoples of Latin America, when both are treated as equals. We seek to question and redefine our ideas about development, based on the diverse knowledge of both peoples. This was our motivation for supporting the creation of combined lifestyles that add to “glocal” (global and local) development.
Being conscious of one’s own perspective (worldview)
Noticing the influence of societal contexts in our daily lives
Creating the possibilities for changing perspectives
Being able to observe and interpret “here and now” of history
Supporting a critical account of the existing societal structures in Europe
Supporting and guiding personal and group change with the help of deep ecology
Dealing with the injuries that shape and hurt relations between the continents, on a personal and communal level
Reflecting the relations between Europe and Latin America by incorporating both worldviews equally
Looking creatively for new possible connections in the relations
New and creative ideas and perspectives that support natural and cultural diversity
We aim to use an experience-based approach, which creates concrete and diverse ways of being implemented in one’s daily life-world and opens new perspectives for action and active engagement. Different speakers and experts have helped us, bringing their experience and expert knowledge of particular areas. The core team has shaped the group process and reflection over the course of the entire process. We have tried to acknowledge the diversity of cultural influences so that the results of our process were and are understandable for people of all cultural backgrounds.
